Wood For the Ceiling

Like all aspects of home construction, beamed ceilings, have seen their share of changes come and go. Before the 16th century, the structure of the roof only acted as the ceiling in most homes. The degree of decoration and embellishment of the building depended on the status and wealth of the family.
By the 17th century, the houses were thinner wooden beamed ceilings divided into compartments, called boxes. These coffered ceilings were adorned with varying degrees of molding and decorative panels.
During the 20th century tongue-and-grooved boards were installed as routine coffered ceilings in the kitchen and bathroom, often against the head, in relief, or simply come head to head.
Now, with the rebirth of vaulted ceilings and more, architects and designers can design and decorate the adaptation and reinterpretation of many traditional forms of architecture coffered ceiling.
